After passing DOATAP: registration, licence, AMKA, tax and insurance
Passing the DOATAP exam is the recognition step, not the end of the paperwork. This guide lists the steps that usually follow and says plainly where we could not confirm a rule. Procedures change, so check each official source before you act. This is not legal advice, and Iatrós is not affiliated with DOATAP or any ministry.
What happens right after I pass the exam?
DOATAP issues a recognition act for your degree. We could not confirm from official pages how long this takes or exactly which document you receive, so watch the DOATAP announcements and ask the office in writing. Keep copies of every document, because the next steps ask for them.
What is the certificate of practice and what does it require?
Under Law 4600/2019 (article 113), the certificate of practice (βεβαίωση άσκησης ιατρικού επαγγέλματος) requires a Greek degree, a recognised EU degree, or a non-EU degree recognised by DOATAP, plus clean civil and criminal-record conditions listed in the law. The text we read also appears to set a waiting period of two years from the DOATAP decision, so read the current article and confirm with the medical association. We could not confirm which body issues it or the fee.
How do I register with the medical association?
Doctors register with a local medical association, which works under the Panhellenic Medical Association (ΠΙΣ). The ΠΙΣ publishes its application forms electronically. We could not confirm the exact document list, the fee or the processing time for DOATAP graduates. Foreign documents normally need an apostille and a certified Greek translation.
How do I get an AMKA and a tax number (ΑΦΜ)?
AMKA is the social security number. For non-EU nationals with a residence permit, mitos.gov.gr describes a procedure for activating or issuing it, but we did not confirm the current steps. We also could not verify the ΑΦΜ procedure for you, so ask the local tax office (ΔΟΥ) or check gov.gr. You will need both numbers before EFKA registration and before you can work or invoice.
What social security contributions will I pay to EFKA?
Employed doctors have contributions withheld by the employer. Self-employed people choose a contribution category; press reports put the minimum monthly contribution at 251.26 euros in 2026, and a category change was possible until the end of January 2026. We could not confirm the full category table or whether special rules apply to doctors, so check efka.gov.gr or ask an accountant.
Do I need malpractice insurance?
We could not confirm a general legal duty to hold professional liability insurance for doctors in Greece. Private practice and many employers expect it in practice. Ask your medical association and your insurer what cover applies to your specialty and workplace before you start seeing patients.
Do I need a residence or work permit as a non-EU doctor?
A non-EU citizen normally needs a valid residence permit that allows work. We could not confirm a dedicated route or document list for doctors recognised through DOATAP. Check immigration.gov.gr and the Greek consulate or the local migration office, and ask whether your recognition act can be used in the application.
What are the first steps toward employment?
Gather your recognition act, certificate of practice and association registration, then follow public hospital recruitment calls and private clinic vacancies. Posts and conditions change each year, and your status as a non-EU doctor may affect eligibility, so read each call carefully. Our guide on the doctors job market in Greece lists recent announcements.
