Doctor salary and workload in Greece

Public-sector pay in Greece is low compared with other European countries and workloads are heavy. Here are the figures we could source, with dates, so you can plan realistically.

How much does an ESY doctor earn?

According to a March 2026 report, a resident earns about 1,359 euro gross a month, roughly 1,000 euro take-home. A Grade B staff physician starts at about 1,658 euro, rising to about 1,713 euro after the first year. A 400 euro gross hospital allowance is added for all ESY doctors.

How does this compare with other countries?

The same report gives, for Germany, about 4,600 to 6,600 euro gross a month for residents and about 9,092 to 10,391 euro for senior consultants. For the UK it gives about 38,831 pounds a year for a new resident.

What is on-call pay?

A February 2024 draft bill listed hourly on-call rates by grade, for example 7.06 euro for a Grade B physician and 5.38 euro for a salaried resident, with premiums for nights, Sundays and holidays and a 20 percent increase. That was a draft at the time, so check the rates now in force.

How many hours do doctors work?

A survey of the European Junior Doctors Association (REST-JD) found that young doctors in Greece work about 72 hours a week on average, against a legal limit of 48. Unions attribute this to staff shortages and long on-call duties.

Are there consequences of the workload?

Burnout is widely reported. In 2026 one public-hospital doctor in the Peloponnese resigned and won 20,000 euro in court over work-related burnout, according to press reports.
