Dentists, pharmacists and nurses: how degree recognition works in Greece

Iatrós is built for doctors taking the ΔΟΑΤΑΠ medical exam. Colleagues in dentistry, pharmacy and nursing often ask how their own path works. This page says what the official sources confirm and what they leave open. It is not legal advice, and Iatrós is not affiliated with ΔΟΑΤΑΠ or any ministry.

What does ΔΟΑΤΑΠ actually do?

ΔΟΑΤΑΠ handles academic recognition of foreign degrees, that is, whether your title is equivalent to a Greek one. It is not the body that gives you the right to practise. Professional licensing is a separate step with other authorities.

How does it work for dentists?

The ΔΟΑΤΑΠ FAQ addresses dentistry together with medicine. For an EU degree awarded after the country joined the EU, it states that no exams are needed, and the professional licence is then requested through the Ministry of Health and the relevant dental association. For a non-EU degree, you must first be examined on courses that ΔΟΑΤΑΠ sets case by case to obtain academic equivalence.

What about pharmacists and nurses?

The ΔΟΑΤΑΠ FAQ we checked does not mention pharmacy or nursing, so we could not confirm the route for them. For EU qualifications, the Section for the Recognition of Professional Qualifications at the Ministry of Education ([email protected]) is the competent authority under Directive 2005/36/EC, but the page does not list which professions it covers. Ask that office, the Ministry of Health and your professional association in writing.

Is there an exam for each profession?

Only partly confirmed. ΔΟΑΤΑΠ can set compensatory measures for a first-cycle degree: a written exam, an internship, a thesis, or a combination, decided by its President under Article 310 of Law 4957/2022. We did not find a confirmed profession-specific exam for pharmacists or nurses, so check with the authorities above.

Does Iatrós cover dentistry, pharmacy or nursing?

No. Iatrós covers medicine only: practice for the ΔΟΑΤΑΠ medical degree recognition exam. We do not offer question banks or guidance for dentistry, pharmacy or nursing, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

Where do I find the official procedures?

Start with doatap.gr (FAQ and application pages) for academic recognition, then the Ministry of Education recognition section for professional qualifications, the Ministry of Health, and your dental, pharmaceutical or nursing body for the licence. The gov.gr and mitos.gov.gr service pages describe procedures, but rules change, so confirm with the office before you apply.
