Doctors job market in Greece in 2026
Greece is hiring specialist doctors for the National Health System (ESY), especially outside the big cities. This guide lists what was announced in 2026 and what you still have to confirm for your own situation.
How many ESY doctor posts were announced in 2026?
In May 2026 the Health Ministry approved a call for 1,131 specialist posts in public health facilities: 1,026 in hospitals, 63 in mental health units and 42 in primary care on small islands. In June 2026 a further 441 posts were announced, spread over the seven health regions, with applications from 9 to 27 July 2026.
Where are the shortages?
Reports describe the biggest gaps on islands and in remote areas. The 2026 calls put emphasis on primary care and underserved areas.
Is there extra pay for hard-to-staff posts?
Reports on the 1,131-post call mention an extra 1,500 euro net per month for doctors in some posts, funded by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation. Check the text of the call for which posts and for how long.
How do I apply?
Applications are submitted online at esydoctors.moh.gov.gr during the window stated in each call. Calls are published by the Ministry of Health and the regional health authorities.
Can a foreign-trained doctor apply?
Eligibility rules, the need for recognition and Greek-language requirements are set in each call. We did not find them summarised in the announcements, so read the call and confirm with the Ministry. Iatrós is not affiliated with ΔΟΑΤΑΠ or the Ministry.
What about the private sector?
We did not find reliable public data on private-sector demand, so we do not give figures. Ask employers and professional associations directly.
